Interpreter stubs[edit]

See https://en.wikipedia.org/en/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2013_December_12#Category:Chinese_interpreter_stubs. The cat "Chinese interpreter stubs" was deleted, but none of the possible associated actions were taken. I tweaked the stub template but was reluctant to create the new cat. Do feel free to change it further. All the best: Rich Farmbrough00:20, 11 May 2014 (UTC).

New Userscript[edit]

While going through stubs to sort, I came across AMD Platform Security Processor. I didn't think it was a stub, and would have manually removed the stub template, but I was inspired to write a script to do it for me. The result: De-Stub.js, a script to remove stub templates from pages. I thought the people involved in this wikiproject might be interested in trying it out. Let me know if you have any questions. --DannyS712 (talk) 09:25, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

@DannyS712: thank you! I gave it a shot, but I was not able to get this to work on Robert Brunham - this page is still a stub, but I just wanted to test it here. A separate point is that it would be better if it could somehow integrate into this script from user Danski454. Most of the work in this project is multi-step - if we are removing stub templates, it's usually to apply more specific stub template(s), so unfortunately this is a bit limited in terms of most of the work that goes on here. But thanks for sharing your work. -Furicorn (talk) 23:25, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
@Furicorn: Figured it out - some stub templates have digits in them, which I didn't account for. Give me a couple of minutes. If you want to apply other stub templates, see User:Danski454/stubsearch. --DannyS712 (talk) 23:27, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
Cool glad you figured it out! Danski's is the script I linked to in my response above. -Furicorn (talk) 23:45, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
@Furicorn: Lol. Yeah, as far as I know @Danski454's script doesn't let you just remove the stub templates with no replacement. --DannyS712 (talk) 00:00, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
@Furicorn:  Done --DannyS712 (talk) 00:05, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Accidentally created stub without proposal[edit]

I created Category:Civil rights movement stubs without noticing the "Please propose new stub templates and categories here before creation". statement. What should I do to make sure everything is okay? Mitchumch (talk) 16:41, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

@Mitchumch: Either try to find 57 more articles that could use it, or revert your edits and use {{db-author}} on both the cat page and the stub template. If you do succeed in finding 57 more, we will need to look at renaming Template:Civil Rights Movement-stub which is not according to convention. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 00:15, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
I can find 57 more articles. What's wrong with the template? Mitchumch (talk) 00:23, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
@Mitchumch: I'm not sure what the correct format would be, but I do know that stub templates should not contain spaces. Also, if renamed, I suggest it be tweaked to clearly indicate it concerns the U.S. civil rights movement. Her Pegship (speak) 17:13, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
Indeed, stub template names never contain spaces - we use hyphens instead. We also do not capitalise words that are not proper nouns. See Category:Stub message templates for examples of names that we do use. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:38, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
Redrose64 Which case form do I use - "Civil-rights-movement-stub" or "civil-rights-movement-stub"? Mitchumch (talk) 02:27, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
They're exactly the same. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 13:28, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
According to naming convention, "as with other templates, the first character is not case-sensitive", thus either format will be treated the same wiki-wise. Her Pegship (speak) 17:06, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
How is this - Template:Civil-rights-movement-stub? Mitchumch (talk) 18:26, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
Fine, and I see that Category:Civil rights movement stubs now has 59 articles (and one template). --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:59, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Stub message templates needing attention[edit]

split from previous section for clarity

@Redrose64: On a separate issue, Category:Stub message templates needing attention has 29 templates missing categories. Looking through them, they appear to have all be created by the same user and only appear on 2 pages each on average. How should this be dealt with? --DannyS712 (talk) 00:27, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
There are at least four common reasons for this:
  1. The template was created before the category.
    • If the category exists (it's a blue link in the template), a WP:NULLEDIT to the template will fix this.
  2. Typo in category name
    • Either amend the template's category parameter to match the actual name of the category, or move the category page to match the name used by the template's category parameter
  3. The |category= parameter looks correct, but actually contains an invisible character (usually a left-to-right mark) immediately after the category name
    • Edit the stub template. Position the mouse some distance to the right of the value of the |category= param, click the mouse. Then press the ← Backspace key sufficient times to remove the last letter. Then retype the letter. Do this also for |category1= and |category2= if present, then save.
  4. The category hasn't been created at all.
There don't seem to be any in error at the moment. Perhaps somebody was quick to fix them. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:38, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
Or possibly the job queue has caught up with the creation of the relevant categories, if they were all issues of the first type. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:56, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Nepalese-business-bio-stub[edit]

I came across {{Nepalese-business-bio-stub}} and the corresponding Category:Nepalese business biography stubs which I suspect were created out of process. I've tidied up the cat which only has one member but I can see scope for expansion, my instinct is to just leave it but I thought I'd raise it here.Le Deluge (talk) 13:41, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

@Le Deluge:Fixed the single page to use the correctly-named {{Nepal-business-bio-stub}}. If you see potential for groth, please use the correct template on more appropriate stubs, so that we can get a good count of these articles. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 15:17, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

New discovery: Six Flags stubs[edit]

I've found Category:Six Flags stubs and {{Six-Flags-stub}}, both created by 99721829Max (talk · contribs) about a week ago, but I can find no evidence that they were proposed beforehand, let alone approved for creation. With only three articles, the potential for growth seems remote. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:40, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

And regardless of potential for groth, the template is misnamed - it should be {{SixFlags-stub}}, since it isn't a subtype of {{Flags-stub}}. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 15:10, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out![edit]

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Template loop detected[edit]

Can someone take a look at Template:XXXTentacion-stub - it has a template look of asbox, but as far as I can tell the template syntax is normal. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 06:47, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

@DannyS712: MVTTXW$ (talk · contribs) had created Template:XXXTentacion-stub/doc consisting of the single line
#redirect [[Template:XXXTentacion-stub]]
which was telling Template:XXXTentacion-stub to transclude itself inside itself - a loop. I have deleted it under WP:CSD#G6. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:27, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
@Redrose64: does ASBOX automatically transclude the /doc page if it exists? I didn't see a transclusion in the stub's source. Thanks for figuring it out --DannyS712 (talk) 08:29, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
It won't be in the code for Template:XXXTentacion-stub, and isn't in the code for Template:Asbox either because that has been Lua-ised. It's actually in the code of Module:Asbox, which is complicated; somebody like Codehydro (talk · contribs), Mr. Stradivarius (talk · contribs) or RexxS (talk · contribs) would be good people to ask. As far as I can work out, it looks for a page that has the same name as the stub template but suffixed "/doc", and if it exists, that gets transcluded. This method is not used very often: the few stub templates that have such a subpage are listed at Category:Stub message templates with documentation subpages. For example, Template:Artist-stub has Template:Artist-stub/doc, which exists only to add an interlanguage link to ro:Format:Ciot-artist - this shouldn't be necessary, the interlanguage link should be set up at d:Q6687644#sitelinks-wikipedia as it is for all the other languages. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:50, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
Your understanding of what the module does in this case is correct. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:41, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

Rock and pop song/single stubs[edit]

I've created category merge discussions for rock single stubs and pop single stubs primarily because the two are used interchangeably with their song stub counterparts. The scheme for single stubs is not as well developed as it is for song stubs (e.g. there's no Category:Pop single stubs parent). Thanks. Bot runs[edit]

Hi. I'd like to make stub sorting easier by running my bot to replace stub templates with other templates when needed. What do people think of the following specific task?

  • Category:Glaciology stubs is current over populated, despite the note that Please note that stubs relating to individual glaciers and landforms should not be marked with this stub, but should be marked with {{geo-stub}} or one of its subtypes. I see that there are 102 pages that are tagged as glaciology stubs but are also both categorized in Category:Glaciers of Ellsworth Land as individual glaciers and have another stub template that is indeed a subtype of geo-stub (Ellsworth Land geography stubs). For those pages, the glaciology-stub template would be removed

If the project supports this, and the bot is approved for these 100 edits, and all goes well, I'll list a number of other such cases that (to me) seem fairly clear cut. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 00:46, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

I'd like to see it in action before putting in my 2c, so I cautiously support the 100-edit run for now. Her Pegship (speak) 16:37, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
@Pegship: The BRFA was approved, and the 102 edits made: [1] - let me know if you see anything amiss. --DannyS712 (talk) 16:32, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Underpopulated stub categories[edit]

What exactly is an "underpopulated" stub category? I mean what is the cut-off? Currently, there are over 200 categories that are tagged as underpopulated but have more than 45 members. --DannyS712 (talk) 06:17, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Generally speaking, we try to have stub cats contain at least 50 stubs, and anything less would be underpopulated. In some cases, the tags may be left from when the categories were undersized; they neither remove themselves nor get removed by a bot. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 21:46, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
If a stub category has fewer than 60 articles in it, it's considered underpopulated. Usually this is because either no one's gotten around to sorting into it, or it was created out of process by someone unaware of the WPSS and its parameters. Her Pegship (speak) 21:47, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Speedy changes[edit]

It was implied at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Stub_sorting/Proposals#Proposals,_March_2019 that a stub type (template) would be renamed if its category was renamed at WP:CFD, even under the Speedy procedure.

Is that desirable in the case of templates, i.e. to rename them after just 48 hours' exposure?

If WPSS would accept that, then I'd have no objection; perhaps a new speedy renaming template could be created for the purpose. However, I would have thought that 7 days' exposure would be preferable. – Fayenatic London 20:45, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Closing discussions[edit]

Well...despite being told that in other Wiki realms it isn't standard practice for the same person to close a discussion who has an opinion on it, it looks as though there are too few of us stub sorters active right now to follow that guideline. If there's no objection, I will go back to closing discussions on which a consensus has been reached, regardless of whether I've participated in them. If anyone else wants to pitch in, feel free. Cheers, Her Pegship (really?) 17:57, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

New script for stub sorting![edit]

A new script has been made for stub sorting: see User:SD0001/StubSorter.js (documentation). It offers a simple approach to stub sorting by providing a HotCat-type search field to search for and add (or remove) any template from Category:Stub message templates. Any feedback on this is welcome. SD0001 (talk) 20:37, 29 June 2019 (UTC)

Bonus: now when navigating to an article from CAT:STUBS, the script interface will be automatically opened for you. SD0001 (talk) 12:42, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

French winter sports biography stubs[edit]

Hello. I've found three templates that are currently populating Category:French winter sports biography stubs and a subcategory:

I was wondering why this was the case. I think the templates should be removed from the parent category as they alrady have a subcategory. Thanks! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 01:27, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

They should not be in both, only the subcategory. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 07:17, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, I was sure that was the case but wanted to double check. Thanks @Redrose64:. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 16:34, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
